In case it gets lost in the noise I think this message is important:

Seeking asylum is not illegal.

Interesting read.

I was in Belfast this weekend and got a chance once again to ride the Glider to and from the city centre and I really enjoyed it. I live in the country and public transport unfortunately is infrequent and relatively expensive - which is sad. But I would love to get rid of my car. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion

The Germans, who know a thing about fascist language say : "wehret den Anfängen" - look out for the beginnings

@GaryLineker
is right to point out that today's anti-migrant language can be such a "beginning"

The nazis started dehumanising people bit by bit, day by day, for years

‘A main factor for the think tack rejecting the UK government’s new Northern Ireland Protocol deal, is that the controversially named Windsor Framework “does not restore and fulfil the Acts of Union 1800”.’

It seems to me that Unionists should be very careful lest the English decide that union with Northern Ireland is no longer in their economic interests. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/po

‘But they did not deny a report that Mr Johnson had asked the DUP to without support until they had looked carefully at the agreement.’

Do you suppose the would be stupid enough to listen to the PM who already screwed them once with his ‘oven-ready’ deal?

Of course they would. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/po

‘Part of her degree meant she learned how to code, the method in which humans interact with computers. The skill essentially involves entering a series of numbers (mainly zeros and ones) in order to tell a computer what to do.’

Oh my. Maybe ChatGpt should write the articles. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/life/fe

‘The DUP really does have only itself to blame for its woes. It’s hard to hope that those who have strategised so badly so far have a clear idea of what to do next.’ belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion

‘The Orange Order was by this appointment ignoring the growing concerns around violence against women and girls, showing that it is not only possible for a man to kill his wife in a jealous rage and only serve five years in prison, but to later be held up as a pillar of the community.’ belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion

“If there had been no Brexit, there would be no protocol, no border in the Irish Sea, no customs posts in Larne, Belfast and Warrenpoint, and Stormont would be working,” he added.

“Those who advocated this form of Brexit charged into the campaign with gusto but failed to do their homework. It is noteworthy that not one of them has taken any responsibility.” belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/po

‘The Tory government might not like it, but they cannot afford not address the issue of pay if they wish to secure the future of the NHS. So, the fact they are refusing to even discuss pay with the health unions would suggest salvaging what is left of the NHS is not a priority.’ belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion

some people don’t want to climb the corporate ladder, even if they used to.

some people don’t want to go “above and beyond.”

some people want less responsibility, not more.

some people want to do the job they were hired to do and be done.

there is *nothing* wrong with this.

we need to normalize language like this. you don’t have to work 90 hours a week to be “dedicated.” you don’t have to love your job. you CAN be in it just for the paycheck. that’s literally what a job is: payment for services.

this rhetoric of “what success looks like” is a falsity we have been tricked into believing to maximize corporate profits. success looks different depending on who and when you ask… sometimes success is getting up in the morning, and sometimes it’s getting promoted. it’s all relative, and we need to remember that.

I taught my daughter to be careful, watchful and polite. She’s young and will do stupid things. We all do. But I worry every time she gets behind the wheel of a car. Every. Single. Time. Fortunately I don’t have a son, but I have nephews and cousins and brothers. Why do we have to carry these burdens, burdens we did not create but are saddled with? These questions are not rhetorical. They are a question of life… please, America, recognize our humanity. Please give us a chance to live. #BLM

UK politics, Lib Dems

If I ever need a reminder of why I left the Lib Dems it's the utter paucity of ambition in quotes like this. This country is so broken that "seeing a GP within 7 days" is an aspirational policy, but there's no desire to mention, let alone tackle, any of the causes of this.
