Whatever Temu are, they must be spending a shedload of cash on advertising. I’ve never visited the site, and yet their adverts are popping up everywhere from YouTube (“Shop like a billionaire!”) to blogs (“Price drop alert”).

@seanddotmedotuk What are they advertising at you? I’m getting everything from facial massagers to weird plastic fingers.

@shezza_t Just had one for an electric pepper grinder. (Something I haven't been searching for)

@shezza_t @seanddotmedotuk I work in AdTech and while there’s a lot of effort goes into figuring out exactly who you are (“what precise demographic information you have grandma!” “all the better to advertise to you”) there’s only so much that can be determined with accuracy. You can be an outlier for a targeting demographic, but if it’s all they have to go on, they’ll take a shot. We remember the times they get it right with the scatter gun way more than we remember the times they get it wrong.

@mo @shezza_t I suspect the underlying algorithms are fascinating.

@mo Is it as expensive as I imagine it would be to have so many adverts across so many different platforms?
