I'm totally useless at social media, innit? I should have said instead.

“do you know ascii code 7?”
“yea, that rings a bell.”

I've written up the above scam in more detail.

Remember, no matter how clever and security-conscious you think you are, these criminals are highly sophisticated.

You have to be lucky every single time. They only have to be lucky once.

Bender & Shah 2024 is now officially published *as open access* at TWeb.

For everyone who is using or promoting LLM driven chatbots as information access systems: this one is for you

You would be surprised at how much I would pay for this, if it actually existed.

I want to do a test on how much traffic and resources the Mastodon embed takes on my server, so boost this plz

Edit: *all done, you can stop sharing now lol*

Everyone likes free stuff! Here's a bunch of free e-books "on Palestine, mass protests, and student rebellions" from Verso Books.

I'm thinking of recording myself reading excerpts from these seven books (and/or some zines?) this weekend in solidarity with those holding it down, and putting them up to listen to/download on my site. Please note that you have to provide some kind of e-mail/contact info when downloading free e-books from Verso, so if you'd rather not do that, I'll put downloadable copies of these e-books alongside the recordings; I'll reply with a link to that page here once they're ready.

Looking at VimScript for the first time and wondering who thought `fu!` was a sensible shortcut for defining functions

I'm proud to announce the launch of the public beta for Clew, my independent web search engine! 🎉🎉🎉

Try Clew: https://clew.se
Add to your browser: https://clew.se/add/

Clew maintains an independent index and is aiming to be a copyleft (APGLv3), self-hostable, privacy-respecting, customizable search engine which prioritizes independent creators/bloggers/writers and penalizes sites with ads and trackers.

Many features are yet to come. If you'd like to support Clew's development and server costs, you can donate to its Liberapay team: https://liberapay.com/Clew/

Boosts are very welcome, as is feedback of any kind!

Oh, you think you’re better than me? Most people are, pal. You need higher standards

Browsers should refuse to respect paste-disabling. This is not something that any user wants.

We've released #PuTTY version 0.81. This is a SECURITY UPDATE, fixing a #vulnerability in ECDSA signing for #SSH.

If you've used a 521-bit ECDSA key (ecdsa-sha2-nistp521) with any previous version of PuTTY, consider it compromised! Generate a new key pair, and remove the old public key from authorized_keys files.

Other key types are not affected, even other sizes of ECDSA. In particular, Ed25519 is fine.

This vulnerability has id CVE-2024-31497. Full information is at chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtath
