Support the striking nurses, please. But don’t support them because they’re saints or they fulfil some sort of Florence Nightingale fantasy you might have. Support them because they are workers who deserve to be fairly paid. Like the postal workers, the transport workers, and all the other workers who are striking now for fair wages.
It recently struck me that 27 years ago there was a movie with Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo playing drag queens, and if it came out today, someone would firebomb the theaters it was in. I'm not putting a sensitive warning on this picture because it's not fucking sensitive. its a movie that came out in 1995. things have moved backwards in a terrifying way.
you ever think about how snow crash was meant to be a dystopia,
but living in a storage unit with power + plumbing sounds a lot better than living out of a van in a walmart carpark, shitting in a bucket, stealing wifi off taco bell
let alone how instead of a fantasy world, we have a metaverse where you wear a suit and tie avatar and attend corporate all hands
In the 18th century, novels were seen as disgusting brain rot, and now we set goals of how many we should virtuously read per year.
I wonder, in 300 years, what kids will be doing that makes their parents bemoan how few video games anyone plays anymore, how badly reaction times and hand eye coordination have plummeted among the young.
Portugal's infrastructure minister gets it:
“If we simply replace all combustion cars with electric cars, we will end up with the same kind of congestion, the same huge amount of lost time in traffic, the same unsustainable levels of road accidents, and the same struggle for public space."
“The car overwhelmed city life and it is something that must change.”
OK, Liz Upton has doubled down and completely fucked up the community goodwill here, she's clearly determined to misunderstand the problem and refuse any sort of corporate introspection. I didn't object to the original hire, but this rank contempt for the community means I won't be buying from #raspberryPi again. I've got five of them, if I need more there are alternative devices.
Being excellent to each other isn't being an edgy stereotypical bro; you can have a bro tone of voice *and* be respectful of people who disagree with, come on it's not hard. You're a private company, make a big deal out of hiring whoever you want, but your tone of voice and language is also a choice. You want to make a counterproductive choice go ahead I guess.
h/t to @jmes who's handling this incredibly well.
I felt compelled to write about this in longer form because it is *such* a hot mess of a study. I look at some things which have been covered in this thread and replies (e.g. the absolute shit definition of variables, bad sampling practice) as well as some things that weren't, such as TERRIBLE statistical analysis.
