Just had an interesting thought about using a Z80 processor to make some sort of Eurorack module.

@shezza_t more likely to have gotten a dolphin rush up there 😉

Holy shit. Ballycastle Harbour is absolutely freezing today.

@iain meh, that seemed pretty tame 🙂

I do see it being forked and commercialised though. Eugen is making Mastodon for a specific mindset. There’s a lot of people approaching Mastodon with an attitude of “I want this to be Twitter without Musk. Make it happen, nerds!”

I still think both viewpoints are valid, as is everything in between.

@seanddotmedotuk @LeifB73 I’m not completely clear, but it is possible to clear out the posts from local and remote caches. What is a bigger problem is that the server caches avatars and header images from every account that has ever had a post seen by someone on the instance.

If you were to boost someone I don’t follow, I get a copy of their avatar and header, and it lives on my server forever. There are moves to get tools to clear those though!

@seanddotmedotuk @LeifB73 So far there’s not been much admin work in terms of dealing with people. It has been a headache to maintain technically speaking. Mastodon eats a lot of disk space and I’m trying to do some migrations soon that are proving tricky enough. It might be my own fault given how I set it up 4 years ago, but it’s definitely not straightforward.

@seanddotmedotuk @LeifB73 I think that’s what people should be gravitating towards when choosing an instance rather than an instance on the right “topic”. There’s no point being on a server that completely reflects your interests if the admins don’t support you.

@seanddotmedotuk @LeifB73 it was born out of the tech community for sure, but I never think of it as tech only. I guess when I created it over 4 years ago, it was only really tech people trying Mastodon.

I think our tech background is probably more indicative of what we believe in, rather than what can be discussed. The people with admin privs are fairly left-leaning, and want it to be a safe space free from harassment and abuse.

@seanddotmedotuk @LeifB73 there’s nitech.online. While it’s loosely based on the tech community, there’s no formal definition.

The biggest issue for any instance you set up is likely to be moderation. NI people will bring their own challenges of course, but the biggest headaches will probably just be standard assholes. Usually men.

2022 is the year we bought a house in Ballycastle and get to enjoy views like this whenever we want. I really can’t complain.

@BeebsyMcA @seanddotmedotuk Should have been “seeing person”, not “sewing person”!

@BeebsyMcA @seanddotmedotuk I think it’s only a (small) issue if you (as a sewing person) see the alt text. Personally I prefer not to see it by default.

Unfortunately, people are increasingly abusing alt text to add extra commentary. Some folks think that hiding a bit of an extra joke in there is what it was made for. Some people are trying to explain the image, rather than describe it. This is the most egregious thing, IMO.

@LeifB73 that explains why I get such a poor signal

@slaine we watched Once this evening for the first time in ages. Still a fantastic film.

@BeebsyMcA @shezza_t there is nowhere in the world that comes close to the beauty of Ireland as New Zealand does.

@OpinionatedGeek @shezza_t @BeebsyMcA I’m not sure I was on that road, but there were definitely some hairy experiences driving down the west coast. I might have practiced handbrake turns a few times…

@shezza_t @BeebsyMcA I think we should compare notes on New Zealand some time. I’ve been to Hawkes Bay a fair bit (I have relatives in Hastings) and a few trips to Taupo/Rotorua.

But my wife and I spent over 3 weeks there for our honeymoon in 2007, and we drove from Auckland to Queenstown and up to Christchurch. Was quite the journey but worth every second!
