@bigzaphod I’m going to assume you’re talking about the Republic of Ireland as opposed to Northern Ireland (UK). I live in the UK bit, but it’s a small enough island, so if there’s anything you want to know about feel free to ask away (or DM if it’s stuff you want a bit more private).

Good luck with the exploration of possibilities!

@bigzaphod pro tip. Best not to talk about your IRAs in Ireland… 😜

@bigzaphod I imagine that the environmental cost of building a new house is pretty high too.

I think we’re getting to a point where financial cost is something we’re going to have to suck up for the environmental benefits. Which means it needs to be wealthy people leading the way, like with electric cars. If we can convince the rich to go all electric to keep up with their rich friends, then it will push the tech down to the less well off. That’s my theory anyway.

@bigzaphod I think this can be a really good approach even without modern IDEs. If you’re constantly re-running the code it will naturally veer towards being idempotent and testable.

@bigzaphod just thinking about this caused my Apple Watch to warn me that my heart rate was too high for being at rest. Or perhaps it was the strenuous gardening activity earlier. Nah, it feels Attenborough-related.

@bigzaphod I get mad when David Attenborough pronounces it “veloc-ee-raptor”, but in Jurassic Park his brother Richard pronounced it “veloc-ih-raptor”. Jeez, Attenborough brothers. Just make up your mind!

@chartier I started a new app a while back and while I’m probably not got much worth breaking, I can promise you that I’m not “moving fast” by any means 😉

@bigzaphod I immediately think of Dogtanian and the Muskehounds!

@bigzaphod I really liked using the Synthwave ‘84 theme, but it was a bit hacky. When Panic brought out their Nova editor with the same* theme I jumped on it. I love using Nova, though the plug-in ecosystem is nothing like that of VSCode.

* I think it’s roughly the same as there seemed to be some interaction between Panic and the Synthwave ‘84 developer, but I’m not 100% on how close they are.

@bigzaphod I can still tell when we got the 5 -> 60 upgrade because that’s when I stopped downloading purchased movies from iTunes and just watched them streaming. And I used to download them in work where I had a decent connection!

@bigzaphod it’s amazing how we’ve managed to make high speeds the baseline in a short period of time. We had 5mbps in this house, and were doing Netflix happily. When we got 60mbps it seemed like luxury, but we’re quickly saturating it as the kids have grown up and become big consumers of bandwidth!

@bigzaphod in a similar vein, I live in a rural area and Internet speeds aren’t amazing. There was a public works project to improve speeds for areas remoter than us, and it brought them gigabit FTTP. Which is awesome for them.

The fibre cables to get to those areas run past my house - there are three poles they could tap from and bring me gigabits speeds, but because my speed (60Mbps) is considered adequate, they won’t do it.

It’s right there. Visible from my desk. Every day.
