@MarkHoltom The Wikipedia section about this is even better 😮 Or worse, not sure: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Cavendish_Ponsonby (under “Waterloo campaign”)
"I'm rich enough, why should my kids get free school meals?"
1) Universal provision means for the price of giving food to your kids who "don't need it", kids who need it definitely get it. No barriers. No forms. No questions or tests.
2) Your kids won't bully the "free meal kids".
3) You have an interest in ensuring that your kids are not just fed but fed well. This means you won't put up with the "poor kid gruel" that you might campaign for to "save money" if you're not using the service.
Dear fedi, I have a domain I'm not going to renew because it is useless to me, but I'd prefer to transfer it to someone who'll use it for something rather than let it become an auction commodity as they often do.
The domain is left.media, and it expires in a month. If in that period nobody contacts me, I will let it lapse. If you want it, let me know at least in broad terms what you plan to do with it.
@tripu I agree. My understanding is that indeed reforestation should happen but it's no way near a solution.
This is up there with "carbon capture technology" as a distraction maneuver, deployed as part of greenwashing campaigns.
@amyvdh At this point I’m content with anyone wearing any sort of mask in any configuration... 😔
Though it's tempting to get out the world's tiniest violin when Sam Bankman-Fried complains about his peanut butter sandwiches, it should make you wonder: if even he can't have his basic needs met in jail, what about the less privileged?

"Spinster" denoted an unmarried woman who spun wool. Highly skilled spinsters were paid enough to afford not to marry. Despite later applied derogatory connotations, it's original meaning included independent women who rejected marriage and male partners entirely.

In HTML, don't use `type="number"` use `type="text" inputmode="numeric"` instead.
`number` silently restricts input, `inputmode` provides the number keyboard on mobile without any of the downsides.
Error messages are far more helpful than input restriction - this goes for `maxlength` too
@ppk Yes. iOS 16.6, tested in-app, Safari, and Firefox.
@mo With great power to add custom emojis comes the great responsibility of carefully curating them
@solene Now you have to worry about not breaking your users' (user's?) workflow, just like `make` did all those years ago https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/20292/why-does-make-only-accept-tab-indentation 😂 😭 😂 😭 😂 😭
It's #BandcampFriday today, and I bought https://nuclearpowertrio.bandcamp.com/album/wet-ass-plutonium, which I discovered recently thanks to @raichoo (thank you!)
I've been working on a tool to help people explore ffmpeg filters in the browser. You can now use a simple node-based editor to compose complex filtergraphs. User testers wanted!
I know the tech industry is in shambles right now, but I'm officially dipped into my long term savings and only have a couple of months before we start dealing with how to pay the mortgage.
I'm a senior software engineer, primary language is Python. I've done web dev, game dev, internal corporate tooling and data pipelines. Been in industry since 2014.
Things I've done you might know:
PursuedPyBear (ppb.dev)
Topps Star Wars Card Trader
Things you definitely haven't:
quoting and revenue tracking tools
Accounting systems
time cards
data analysis publishing tools
database query optimization in many flavors [MongoDB, Postgres, SQLServer, Athena/PrestoDB]
E-Commerce platforms
I'm pragmatic but opinionated on most things and my leadership philosophy is 100% letting people with the interest do the work, and improving code bases via code review, pairing, and regular refactoring.
If you've got a leads or a position, please send them my way.
